  7. Hi, I teach in several different environments — universities and organizations — and when I teach an online course I like to have some live meetings. One university uses Wimba Live Classroom and the other has no tool and is just getting into some hybrid and online learning. The Live Classroom lets the students and I talk (audio and type), share a computer screen, view a powerpoint, and write on a whiteboard. It also has break out rooms so that students can work in teams for a time and then report back to the full group. The university (and workplaces) without any tool who now want me to teach online are unwilling to purchase a tool such as Live Classroom. I don’t believe I can be as effective without any live interaction.

    I’d love to hear from others on these questions:

    What other tools are available? Any info on cost?
    How do you feel about teaching with no live interaction?

  8. There is much debate about the blend of different learning methodologies from purely Anagogical to Pedagogical, from Social and informal to Instructor lead and formal. Any reasonable assessment will doubtless conclude that a blend is required to get the best out of the learner and the content dependent on context, content, the demographic (Or audience) and the desired outcome for the commissioning party.

    To this end I would very much like to get peoples feedback on what they think the right blend is in their environments.

    I would suggest that an appropriately worded question might be:

    “Where do you see the balance between social, informal learning and formal instructor lead training in your environment?”

    Happy for you to change the exact wording but if you could keep the gist I think it would be useful for all.



    1. Well, as a future English teacher I think the social learning style is key and for me would be the primary ingredient if you will in the blend of methodologies. Informal learning would follow closely since I feel it is important to get students to bring in their own experiences from outside the classroom and compliment and mesh what they learn in a formal setting with what they’ve learned and experienced elsewhere. Teaching students how to make connections to the real world is the rudimentary element of teaching them critical thinking skills, in my view. Then they need to grasp the importance of communication skills and how the one cannot work without the other. So I see both of these as, more or less equally, being the chief, though by no means sole, learning styles that I think educators ought to implement more rigorously in their classrooms.

  9. We keep hearing/talking/reading about learning organizations and workplace learning.
    In this context, there are some questions I have. If we could have a #lrnchat session on these, it would be wonderful.

    1. Who are learning consultants?
    2. What are some of the functions/tasks of a learning consultant?

    1. Steve – r.e. Crowdsourcing training – I go to my marketing/PR folks and see what they’re up to with social media. Training on this topic to your learners can be lessons learned from your company’s best practice. I ask them to screencast what they’re doing that’s working, then add it as a video to my online course. Makes for great content I don’t have to recreate…

    FF seems like a good dovetail to Twitter, and may actually not be a bad tool for enterprise (perhaps a proprietary version). Yammer & Twitter are great for short bursts of ideas, etc. but go only so far when it comes to focus and deeper collaboration and expansion of ideas.

  24. If we chat about the usefulness of Twitter…I’m curious about if people think it’s all about collecting followers. After yesterday’s UK Gov’t announcement that staff can/should start using it. Local news shows started talking about how to sign up and get people to follow you. I find facebook is sometimes nothing more than “I have more friends than you”. I’m hoping twitter doesn’t go that way as well. For me, I follow quality (mostly) not quantity.

  25. I’ve been thinking of doing some research into the effectiveness of different multimedia when creating learning agents (video, animation, illustrations, photos, sound or none). Anyone know of any existing research I should review or have any other suggestions of types of media to experiment with?

  26. Change Management. It’s clearly an important part of many business strategies and corporate decision making processes, but how do we as learning professionals institute our own change management strategies when making major modifications to the learning landscape. Example: You’re a WLP implementing a new LMS. You hope that it is accepted and utilized for it’s strengths. Your worst fear: The entire company will revolt. How do you use the principles of change management to control your message and make the change a positive one?

  27. Have you considered switching around the days you hold the chat? For the last several weeks and for the forseeable future, I am busy every Thursday evening, but have (some) other evenings free.     1. We haven’t considered holding on another night (at least at this point), but we are considering an earlier-in-the-US-day, evening for other parts of the world #lrnchat sometime this summer.     1. “what apps/methods do people use for storyboarding e-learning?”

    2. This is may seem like a strange question, but here goes: “what do you find are best practices for working with authoring tools w/o having an instructional background?”

      BRAIN RULES, by John Medina, offers tips for engaging people (the rules), underlying science, and insights. Some practices are already used by many ID practitioners. Garr Reynolds (of Presentation Zen fame) summarizes points nicely for presenters here: http://bit.ly/KEABr

      NUDGE, by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. Insights into choice architecture and responsibility. Begs questions: When is training is a nudge? What responsibility to we have as learning designers? How can we use choice architecture to shape experiences and gather more accurate feedback?

      PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL, by Dan Ariely. Quick read along the lines of other behavioral economics books (Outliers, Blink, etc.). Better understanding the irrational nature of people and our decision-making processes is key to designing more effective learning experiences.
