Transcript – December 15, 2016: The Gift of Learning

#lrnchat is an online chat over the social messaging service Twitter. It is held on Thursdays at 8:30-9:30pm ET/5:30-6:30pm PT. Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. We aim to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented and focus on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.  If you an idea for a topic that you would like to suggest for #lrnchat, please feel free to reach out to any of the Chat Hosts.

Transcript – February 9, 2017: Self-Directed Learning

#lrnchat is an online chat over the social messaging service Twitter. It is held on Thursdays at 8:30-9:30pm ET/5:30-6:30pm PT. Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. We aim to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented and focus on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.  If you an idea for a topic that you would like to suggest for #lrnchat, please feel free to reach out to any of the Chat Hosts.

This Week’s Questions

  • What sorts of formal learning experiences (Workshops, Conferences, Classes, etc.) have you chosen in the last few years?
  • How do you choose which experiences to participate in? Are they usuallly related to your own goals or something set by org?
  • When and how have your expectations and reality not matched? (i.e. – being beyond pleased or disappointed)
    • CLARIFICATION: Your expectations of a self-directed learning experience.
  • What makes it easier to learn during these types of experiences? What makes it more difficult?
  • What would you like to see at something like a conference that you think could enhance your learning?
  • What can you do to make an experience better fit your own needs?
  • What do you do before or after the experience to help make what you learn during the experience stick more?
  • Did your organisation value your achievements? if so, how, if not, why not?
  • What kind of moral or other support would have been useful/appreciated? How can you get that next time?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.

Transcript – January 12, 2017 – Competence and Competencies

  • What are “”competencies””? Is there a/what is the difference between ‘having a competency’ and ‘being competent’?
  • What is “”talent””? Does it/how does it differ from a competency?
  • How do you assess your own skills/talents?How do you know you’re competent? Do you/how do you seek feedback?
  • Are there areas in which you’d like to grow that you’ve found especially difficult? What can you do to improve?
  • How do you know when a competency or competencies become obsolete?
  • Thinking of your own learning/growth, how do you anticipate the future? How will you choose what to develop?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.

Transcript – January 5, 2017: Technology Potpourri

#lrnchat is an online chat over the social messaging service Twitter. It is held on Thursdays at 8:30-9:30pm ET/5:30-6:30pm PT. Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. We aim to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented and focus on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.  If you an idea for a topic that you would like to suggest for #lrnchat, please feel free to reach out to any of the Chat Hosts.

Transcript – December 8, 2016: Learning from Social Media

  • Can you remember the first time you learned something via social media (SoMe)? Details?
  • What are some ways to ensure the source you are learning from is credible?
  • What are your favorite channels for learning via SoMe? Why those? Has/how has your PLN changed over time?
  • Tell us about the best boss/mentor you ever had and how they helped you grow/learn/improve?
  • What technologies in the last year or two have made your professional practice better/easier?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.
