Transcript – February 9, 2017: Self-Directed Learning

#lrnchat is an online chat over the social messaging service Twitter. It is held on Thursdays at 8:30-9:30pm ET/5:30-6:30pm PT. Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. We aim to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented and focus on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.  If you an idea for a topic that you would like to suggest for #lrnchat, please feel free to reach out to any of the Chat Hosts.

This Week’s Questions

  • What sorts of formal learning experiences (Workshops, Conferences, Classes, etc.) have you chosen in the last few years?
  • How do you choose which experiences to participate in? Are they usuallly related to your own goals or something set by org?
  • When and how have your expectations and reality not matched? (i.e. – being beyond pleased or disappointed)
    • CLARIFICATION: Your expectations of a self-directed learning experience.
  • What makes it easier to learn during these types of experiences? What makes it more difficult?
  • What would you like to see at something like a conference that you think could enhance your learning?
  • What can you do to make an experience better fit your own needs?
  • What do you do before or after the experience to help make what you learn during the experience stick more?
  • Did your organisation value your achievements? if so, how, if not, why not?
  • What kind of moral or other support would have been useful/appreciated? How can you get that next time?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.

Transcript – February 2, 2017: Implicit Learning – Learn Without Trying

  • When have you learned something implicitly (unconsciously)? – You realized you knew all the lyrics to a song?
  • When does your explicit/conscious learning become unconscious? – Driving a car without thinking about it.
  • What happens to cause ‘implicit’ learning?
  • “in a situation of danger, it’s more important to respond rapidly than to respond accurately.” Agree/disagree? Why?
  • A great deal of learning is implicit. How can we become more mindful of our own implicit learning?
  • What’s one thing you plan to learn in 2017 (explicitly or implicitly)?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.

Transcript – January 19, 2017: Lrnchat Talent Show

  • What’s “”talent””? How do you recognize it? Where does it come from?
  • What’s a talent you chose to develop? Why that one? How did you go about it? How long to become proficient(ish)?
  • What obstacles did you encounter? Why/how did you persevere? What kills/supports persistence?
  • What’s a talent you wish you had? Can talent be developed if interest is strong enough? How could you go about getting better?
  • What talents do you have that you have not developed? Why not? What’s the “”payoff”” for working to develop a talent?
  • Is talent something that peaks, or can it grow indefinitely the more you practice? Why/Why not?
  • What did you learn tonight? Did you find new commitment to developing a talent?
Please excuse the format of this week’s transcript as our typical capturing method experienced an error.

Transcript – January 12, 2017 – Competence and Competencies

  • What are “”competencies””? Is there a/what is the difference between ‘having a competency’ and ‘being competent’?
  • What is “”talent””? Does it/how does it differ from a competency?
  • How do you assess your own skills/talents?How do you know you’re competent? Do you/how do you seek feedback?
  • Are there areas in which you’d like to grow that you’ve found especially difficult? What can you do to improve?
  • How do you know when a competency or competencies become obsolete?
  • Thinking of your own learning/growth, how do you anticipate the future? How will you choose what to develop?
