Transcript – April 2, 2015: Wearable Tech

#lrnchat is an online chat over the social messaging service Twitter. It is held on Thursdays at 8:30-9:30pm ET/5:30-6:30pm PT.

Participants are people interested in the topic of learning from one another and who want to discuss how to help other people learn in formal, informal, social and mobile ways. We aim to steer clear of topics that are more “training department” oriented and focus on how people learn, what they learn, and what we’re learning.  If you an idea for a topic that you would like to suggest for #lrnchat, please feel free to reach out to any of the Chat Hosts.

This Week’s Chat Questions

  • We always begin with this: What did you learn today? If not today, then this week?
  • How do you define “wearable technology” in the context of mobile learning? What does it include and not include?
  • Do you agree that wearable technologies will change learning forever? Why or why not?
  • What learning experiences have you had with wearable technologies?
  • What other learning possibilities do you foresee, imagine for wearable tech?
  • How might wearable technologies negatively impact the learning experience?
  • How can we leverage wearables to increase “connectedness” within learning communities?

8:41 PM JD_Dillon A1) Context can vary. Most tech can be applied to learning in some way. If it collects data that helps me make decisions, I learn. #lrnchat

8:42 PM trainersleaders RT @JD_Dillon Some wearable tech feeds me info. In other cases my actions are feeding data into the tech. Both can drive learning. #lrnchat
8:43 PM jsuzcampos Q1) I wear it (on my body) and it reports digital data on my performance. I share it w/my trainer. Best example: my Garmin watch. #lrnchat
8:43 PM Quinnovator @trainersleaders why lack of use of hands? Or do you mean no hands to transport? (interfaces can use hands, no?) #lrnchat
8:43 PM kelly_smith01 RT @JD_Dillon: A1) Any electronic device that attaches to my person … #lrnchat
8:43 PM JD_Dillon A1) I don’t necessarily have to be mobile to benefit from wearable tech (ex: Glass), but it is a benefit. #lrnchat
8:43 PM annasabramowicz @JD_Dillon Q1) So true, the data gathered can be used to drive future actions/corrections = learning #lrnchat
8:43 PM Quinnovator a1) if it’s on me, and augmenting me, it’s wearable tech #lrnchat
8:43 PM TweetingRhea A1. Electronic devices you wear. Usually in health /fitness realm. Outputs data via apps/just data dump. (not your mom’s pedometer) #lrnchat

8:45 PM write2tg RT @lrnchat: Q1) How do you define “wearable technology” in the context of mobile learning? What does it include and not include? #lrnchat
8:45 PM jsuzcampos Q1) Based on all that data, my trainer writes plans so I can run faster. I adapt based on what I learn about me from the device. #lrnchat
8:45 PM WinnyLaura Q1) so it’s not ‘language’ but a device to help collect and store data that helps us learn? #lrnchat
8:46 PM annasabramowicz @jsuzcampos Yes, real time feedback! I actually think it can be as simple as a pedometer – it’s how you use it to learn #lrnchat
8:46 PM kelly_smith01 Q1) Something carried or worn by human units which can receive or/and transmit data or playback content. #lrnchat
8:46 PM duchampian Get here late #lrnchat wazup

8:48 PM jsuzcampos Hi @WinnyLaura, to me, all learning is relationships. that’s my thing! I like your description of reciprocity of the relationship #lrnchat
8:48 PM lodtrain A2) I think of it more like blending, definitely enhancing and adding to other ways of learning #lrnchat

8:48 PM write2tg A1) Wearable technology in the context of mobile learning has to be easy to wear, comfortable to use and seamless. #lrnchat
8:48 PM JD_Dillon A2) The “forever” part is likely an overstatement – tech constantly evolves. But yes it has opportunity to enhance performance. #lrnchat
8:48 PM write2tg RT @lrnchat Q2) Do you agree that wearable technologies will change learning forever?
Why or why not? #lrnchat
8:48 PM Quinnovator a2) hate the idea of ‘forever’. Fundamentally? Not really. Not more than mobile, it’s the ubiquity that matters, not the mode #lrnchat

8:50 PM JD_Dillon A2) Given that we still can’t effectively apply mobile tech to support performance in many ways, will we even take advantage? #lrnchat
8:50 PM Quinnovator a2) think the thing is having that cognitive augmentation where/whenever, wearable or pocketable #lrnchat
8:50 PM annasabramowicz @Quinnovator – thinking of the seamless, it is on my person and I don’t have to think about using it like with a mobile device #lrnchat
8:51 PM WinnyLaura Q2) I think it depends on the context – can accelerate dev of communities and special interest groups #lrnchat
8:51 PM Quinnovator a2) something fundamental about not having to pull out of a pocket? Thinking no, but willing to consider alternate viewpoints #lrnchat

8:51 PM jankenb2 #lrnchat Insofar as convenience to tech is an obstacle to using it, then yes. WT will off load the need to memorize & improve our ap skills
8:52 PM Dan_Jacques_LD A2) If wearable tech becomes integrated into life as smartphones have done, then in becomes naturally part of learning through ppl #lrnchat
8:52 PM joansie74 A2) yes, as tools that will make those big learning moments a much more frequent event, i.e. Record, reflect, and share. @lrnchat #lrnchat
8:52 PM JD_Dillon A2) Will my wearable tech connect me to my LMS? I need my LMS … 😜 #lrnchat
8:52 PM chet_stevenson @Quinnovator I suppose the whole idea is faster access to information. #lrnchat
8:52 PM trainersleaders Early adaptors already doing amazing work: MT @JD_Dillon …will we even take advantage [of wearable tech in learning]? #lrnchat
8:52 PM Quinnovator @annasabramowicz so the quick glance (wrist) or the unnoticeable visual overlay (glasses) trumps the ‘grab from pocket’? Plausible #lrnchat
